Ultrarunning Coaching

Train for Your Ultra. Build a Body That Can Handle the Distance.

Individualized ultrarunning coaching from a Doctor of Physical Therapy and UESCA-certified ultrarunning coach.

Ultrarunning demands more than simply running more miles.

Whether you’re preparing for your first 50K, working toward a 100-mile race, or chasing a new performance goal, your training needs to prepare you for the unique demands of spending hours on challenging terrain.

Scott Keffer combines Physical Therapy expertise and ultrarunning coaching to create individualized training built around your goals, experience, body, schedule, and race.

The goal isn’t simply to get you to the starting line. It’s to help you build the strength, endurance, and durability needed to handle the training—and the race itself.

Why Work With Dr. Scott?

Doctor of Physical Therapy + UESCA-Certified Ultrarunning Coach

You don’t need another generic training plan.

You need a training approach that considers both how you’re training and how your body is responding to that training.

As a Doctor of Physical Therapy, Scott understands strength, mobility, movement, and how the body responds to increasing physical load.

As a UESCA-certified ultrarunning coach, he understands the demands of long-distance running, including mileage progression, elevation, technical terrain, fatigue, recovery, and race-specific preparation.

Combining these two perspectives allows your training to be built around the whole athlete—not simply a weekly mileage target.

Your coaching may consider:

  • Your current fitness and training history
  • Strength and mobility
  • How you respond to increasing training load
  • The demands of your specific race
  • Recovery and life outside of running
  • How your training needs to change as you progress

Train Smarter. Build Capacity. Go Further.

Who Is Ultrarunning Coaching For?

Ultrarunning coaching isn’t just for elite athletes.

  • First-Time Ultrarunners – Preparing for your first 50K, 50-mile, or longer race? Build your training progressively while learning how to manage the demands of long-distance running.
  • Experienced Ultrarunners – Looking to improve your performance, increase your distance, or take on a more challenging race? Coaching can provide a more intentional approach to your training.
  • Trail Runners Moving to Longer Distances – Already comfortable on trails but need to build the endurance and durability required for significantly more time on your feet? Your training can build on the fitness you already have.
  • Runners Returning to Training – Coming back after an injury, break, or busy season of life? Your program can start with your current capacity, rather than simply returning to your previous mileage.
  • Runners With Busy Lives – Training has to fit your life. Your program can account for work, family, travel, sleep, recovery, and the inevitable weeks when things don’t go according to plan.

Training for an Ultra Is About More Than Mileage

Ultrarunning creates demands that shorter-distance running doesn’t.

  • Time on your feet: Hours of repetitive loading require strength and endurance that develop progressively.
  • Climbing: Uphill running and hiking demand significant work from your calves, quads, glutes, and cardiovascular system.
  • Descending: Downhill running creates substantial eccentric loading and requires your legs to remain strong when fatigued.
  • Technical terrain: Roots, rocks, steep trails, and uneven footing require your feet, ankles, hips, and trunk to constantly adapt.
  • Fatigue: The goal isn’t just to move well when you’re fresh. You need the capacity to keep moving efficiently as the miles accumulate.

Your training should prepare you for the demands you’ll actually encounter on race day.

What Does Ultrarunning Coaching Include?

Your program is built around your experience, goals, schedule, and target race.

  • Running – Mileage progression, long runs, back-to-back long runs, hills, recovery runs, and race-specific workouts.
  • Strength – Individualized strength work to develop the muscular strength and endurance needed for long-distance trail running.
  • Trail Preparation – Training for climbing, descending, hiking, technical terrain, and prolonged time on your feet.
  • Mobility & Movement – Targeted mobility and movement work based on your individual needs rather than a one-size-fits-all routine.
  • Recovery & Training Load – A balanced approach to training stress, recovery, rest, and the demands of life outside running.

Train for Your Specific Ultra

Your race is unique. Your training should be too.

A flat 50K is different from a mountainous 50-mile race. A 100-mile event requires a different approach than a first 50K.

The goal isn’t to prepare you for “an ultra.” It’s to prepare you for your ultra.

“Dr. Dan is an excellent practitioner! His dry needling and exercises were integral in healing my frozen shoulder! I refer my chiropractic patients to him when I know that his modalities would help them best.  Thank you ????”

“Dan is great. I have a several year history of unilateral hip pain, weakness, and reduced mobility.  I attributed it to tight muscles and overuse from biking, but after self diagnosis and hip impingement online courses I elected to get it checked out for real. He doubted my inflexibility hypothesis, went to work on dry needling, strengthening stabilizer muscle groups, and then helped me build back up a snatch squat.  The work was hard but progress was consistent, the phone apps to teach/track exercises are easy to work with, and Dan’s advice is spot on.  I’m pain free with squats for the first time in 7 years.  He even helped me with some secondary shoulder issues.  I am happy to recommend the Breakthrough Performance Team to anyone dealing with ongoing joint struggles…”
